UCCP high bishops demand Arroyo to resign
By Grace L. Plata

THE Protestant United Church of Christ in the Philippines "demands" the resignation of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and her cabinet members.

In a press conference Monday afternoon, UCCP bishops read out a pastoral statement urging people to "claim our claim for the truth."

The bishops said, "The events of the past weeks have once again exposed the ills of the Arroyo government."

Bishop Eliezer Pascua, UCCP Secretary General, said UCCP is merely doing what many Filipinos are doing at this point - demanding for accountability.

Pascua said it is not only the ZTE-National Broadband Network (NBN) deal that the president has to answer for but human rights violations as well.

"Sa UCCP pa lang, marami sa aming pastors and members (are victims) ng extra-judicial killings and forced disappearances," Pascua said.

He added that just Monday, their churches in Visayas had military and police hunting some of their pastors.

"Meron silang dala-dalang mga pictures ng aming mga pastor. Hinahanap nila," Pascua said.

Pascua added that in the president's affirmation of her position, she should be the most accountable for the issues.

"All the more she has to back it up with the actions being called for by the people," Pascua said.
