Friday, February 29, 2008 Anti-Arroyo rally Friday
AROUND 3,000 members of religious organizations, academe, and civil society groups are expected to converge Friday at the Rizal Park to call on government officials to be honest and accountable, as well as for the ouster of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
In an interview Thursday, Sister Elsa Compuesto MSM, executive secretary of the Sisters Association of Mindanao, said it is very important that government officials are made aware that they should portray the highest standard of morality and integrity.
"If a member of an organization violates the rules that has been agreed upon is meted out with sanctions and punishments, so much more should the person holding the highest position in the land," Compuesto said.
The interfaith rally, which has been dubbed as "Interfaith Worship for Truth and Accountability," is slated later Friday afternoon at the Rizal Park.
She added that schools and other religious organizations have also shown interest in taking part in today's interfaith rally.
Compuesto added that their actions are not contrary to the statement issued by the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines last Tuesday wherein the influential Catholic bishop's group refrained from calling for the ouster of Arroyo.
"She has exerted all efforts to curtail everyone from telling the truth," Compuesto explained as to why they are now calling for the ouster of the President instead of simply asking her to tell the truth on the various anomalies that hound her administration.
"Why does she have to hide, if she has not done anything," Compuesto asked.
"She must be transparent in her governance," Compuesto added. (CPM)
