A DABAWENYO topped the recently concluded oratorical contest organized by the Philippine Heart Association and Philippine College of Cardiology held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Mandaluyong on February 23.
The national finals were the culmination of the various activities lined up by those associations for Heart Month 2008 under the theme "The Heart of the Youth is the Heart of the Nation."
Pius Totanes Sto. Domingo, a second year student of Ateneo de Davao High School, representing Davao-Southern Mindanao, bested fourth year students from five other regions and emerged national champion.
Ever proud of Davao City, he wore an ethnic-inspired Barong Tagalog during the contest. He wowed the audience with his outstanding delivery of his piece entitled "Go the Distance" earning him a unanimous decision from the board of judges headed by lawyer Carol Oñate.
Baguio-Northern Luzon got second place and NCR third. The organizers and sponsors were impressed with his speech and delivery that he was invited to deliver his winning speech during the national convention of cardiologists in May 2008 at the Edsa-Shangrila Plaza.
Pius was trained by Joseph Dennis Rivamonte of Ateneo who also went to Manila through the courtesy of the event's sponsor, Therapharma. They were accompanied by Dr. Alisa Bernan, the president of PHA Davao-Southern Mindanao chapter.
