Diwalwal miner killed in tunnel cave-in
By Ben O. Tesiorna

A SMALL-scale miner was killed while another was reported missing when the gold tunnel at Diwalwal in Mt. Diwata, Monkayo, Compostela Valley collapsed Sunday afternoon.

Mt. Diwata barangay captain Franco Tito identified the fatality as Recto Pimentel of Malita, Davao del Sur. His body was recovered a few hours after the tunnel collapsed.

Locals are still trying to find Satatil Herana, also of Malita, under the tunnel rubbles.

The cave-in happened around 3 p.m. of March 2 while the two miners were working inside the Bulbcor tunnel in Purok 4.

Authorities blamed the collapse to the incessant rains for the past few weeks.

It was learned that a warning has already been issued on the landslide-prone areas since the rains started. Diwalwal has long been declared a disaster-prone area.

Almost two months ago, landslides buried the Filipinista Church in Purok 1A and the residence of Emelyn Ordonez in Purok 18. Estimated cost of damage to property is peg at P200,000, but no one was hurt in the incident.

On July 9, 2007, five people were dead, while two others were injured due to landslide. The fatalities were identified as Ralph Soldia, Rosemarie Mamaril, 16, and her live-in partner Roderick Cabaluna, Marlito Bordios, and Tata Rosales.
