Wednesday, March 05, 2008 Record field enlists in Konica golf event
MORE than 110 teams enlisted in the Konica Minolta National Pro-Am Golf Championship, which opened March 4 and will run until March 8 at The Riviera's Langer in Silang, Cavite.
The organizing committee headed by Commo. Danilo E. Pizarro (Ret.) is now sorting out the entries to determine the qualified players based on their handicap indices and rankings released by the Professional Golfers Association of the Philippines.
"We need to be very careful insofar as our entries is concerned to avoid disqualifications as what happened last year to many of our participants," said Pizarro, also the vice president of the organizing National Golf Association of the Philippines (NGAP).
An avalanche of applicants beat the deadline of registration on February 27 for the tournament sponsored chiefly by U-Bix Corporation through its Chairman and President, lawyer Edilberto B. Bravo.
Most of those disqualified last year were foreigners, especially Koreans, who entered the tournament with undocumented handicap indices.
This year, all foreigners will play scratch.
"I believe that 110 is the magic number of entries for our tournament," said Bravo. "A compact field promises a tight and exciting competition."
Two Toyota cars will be staked as hole-in-one prizes through TMPI first vice president Daniel M. Isla on March 4 and in the tournament proper March 5-8.
