Poultry production down by 9%
THE poultry industry in Davao Region did not perform well in 2007, the regional office of the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS)-Southern Mindanao reported.
Data submitted by the BAS-Southern Mindanao to the regional office of the National Economic Development Authority (Neda) showed that poultry production in the region was adversely affected by the closure of some layer farms, thus the decrease in output.

The poultry industry recorded a 9.2 percent decrease.
Because of the decrease in chicken and duck production, output of duck and chicken eggs also went down by 5.3 percent and 22 percent, respectively.
The region's total poultry production was placed at 54,477 metric tons in 2007 compared to 60,034 metric tons in 2006.
Chicken production was only recorded at 52,644 metric tons last year, lower by 9 percent from 57,877 metric tons in 2006, while duck production was only placed at 1,833 metric tons from 2,157 metric tons.
Meanwhile, as to the livestock output of the region, production of carabao, swine, and goat improved in the response to higher consumer demand.
Only cattle production was noted to have decreased by 14.7 percent due to scarce supply from outside sources.
Carabao, swine, and goat production, on the other hand, increased by 17.3 percent, 1.8 percent, and 2.2 percent, respectively. (JGRS)
