Prices of aquaculture products remain stable

PRICES of bangus, tilapia, shellfish, and seaweeds have remained stable, based on the monitoring of one of the biggest public markets in Davao City Tuesday.

Rosella Mahusay, fish vendor at the Agdao Public Market for more than 30 years, told Sun.Star that aquaculture products usually do not increase during Holy Week even as demand for fish and other marine products is high.

"The prices of tilapia and bangus remain the same. Prices of aquaculture products usually remain the same even during Holy Week or Christmas. We only increase the prices if there's a limited supply," Mahusay said.

Prices of bangus are now pegged at P90, P100, P110, and P120, depending on sizes, while tilapia costs P60-65 per kilogram.

Roselyn Sepro, a vendor of shellfish and seaweeds, also said that prices of such products are not expected to increase during Holy Week.

"Seaweeds and shellfish prices will remain stable. I understand that only fishes especially from the municipal sources will increase because of the little supply. During Holy Week, most fishermen refuse to go fishing to observe Holy Week," Sepro said.

Prices of shellfish range from P30 to P50 depending on sizes, while prices of seaweeds are now placed at P40 to P50 per kilogram.

Meanwhile, prices of tuna and malasugue are monitored to have increased by P10 and P30 per kilogram, respectively.

Victor Granaderos, fish vendor, said the increase in the prices of these products started last week.

"Tuna now costs P150 per kilogram, while malasugue costs P190 per kilogram. Our products came from General Santos City. Our prices just depend on how much we get our products from our supplier," Granaderos said. (JGRS)
