Fronteras-Sevilla pair tops badminton event

MARIE Anne Fronteras and Anabelle Sevilla of the University of Mindanao topped the women's 18 years old and above division of the dxRD 711-Soshine Radio badminton tournament staged March 1 at the 4-Play courts along V. Mapa St., Davao City.

Seven other pairs shared the limelight after ruling their respective divisions in the tournament held to mark the third anniversary of 17 Sonshine radio stations owned by Reverend Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy, chief executive officer and president of the Sonshine Media Network International, which is based in Davao City.

Edel Hamid Montera and Jeffrey Quiben made it a double celebration for UM when they took the men's crown in the 18 years old and above.

Leo Pulumbarit and Ritchie Al Mearns of the Holiday Gym and Spa, meanwhile, took the men's title in the 30 years old and above category, while Davao City's Millet Nevasca and Agnes Atienza captured the women's crown in the same class.

Other winners were Elderico Verano of Talomo National High School and Nicolo Bangayan of the Ateneo de Davao University; Ana Michelle Alba of Talomo National High School and Kim Therese Jarabello of the Ateneo de Davao University; Vetrimar Concepcion of the University of Mindanao and Ian Carl Villapaz of the Talomo National High School; and Mary Joy Maynubay and Jillian Derequito of the Ateneo de Davao University.

A total of 60 pairs from different cities and provinces here in Mindanao saw action in the tournament.

Aside from Davao players, other participants in the tournament dubbed the "Battle of the Champs" were from Digos City, Tagum City, Kidapawan City, Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Sur, and North Cotabato. (Charles Raymond A. Maxey)
