Age-group netfest opens March 29
By Marianne Saberon-Abalayan

MULTI-titled netters Juan Paolo Cansino and El Santo Santos, who recently renewed their contracts with Head, will lead the charge for Davao City when the 2008 Head Junior Tennis Tour Satellite Circuit kicks off with its Davao leg on March 29 to April 2 at the Ecoland Phase 4 Tennis Courts.

Cansino, a student at the Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU), and Santos, of the Rizal Memorial Colleges, are heavy favorites in the boys 16-under and 18-under divisions, respectively.

Both players have won numerous leg titles in the past editions of the Head netfest played in key cities of the country. They will use the newest Head Microgel Radical Tennis Raquets in their campaign this year.

Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) regional vice president for Mindanao Juanito Cansino Jr. said other categories entered in the Dynamic Sports Corporation-sponsored tournament are 10-under unisex, boys and girls 12-under, 14-under, girls 16-under, and 18-under events.

Cansino said players from Cebu City, Bacolod City, Cotabato City, General Santos, Cagayan de Oro, Compostela Valley, Tagum, Mati, Davao Oriental and Digos are expected to give Davao City players a tough contest.

"The Head tennis circuit is now in its ninth year of identifying and developing players in the grassroots," Cansino said.

From Davao, the tour will then proceed to Cagayan de Oro, Dumaguete, Bacolod, Iloilo, Cebu, Baguio and Metro Manila.

Trophies, tennis equipment, and accessories and Philta ranking points are up for grabs in the Group 2 event.
