Friday, March 28, 2008 Drifting to myDSL By Jojie Alcantara Witerary
"I drift not because it is a quicker way around a corner, but it is the most exciting way." -- Keiichi Tsuchiya, Original Drift King (born in Japan, 1956)
I MUST have had this blank stare when Gary Dujali of myDSL casually invited me to "check out the drifters at Damosa Gateway". For a split second there, I actually asked myself, why in heaven's name was PLDT bringing the homeless into my city?
Then it dawned on me how the word "drifter" has elevated itself from a definition of aimless wanderer, to something as exciting as "one who breaks the traction limit to the rear tires while turning to achieve a faster entry speed and exit speed."
Now that's drifter to the Urban Slang Dictionary, thank goodness I have viewed educational films such as Tokyo Drift and my other favorite, Initial D.
Drifting is a high-skill driving technique and motor sport involving drivers who maneuver their cars to slide sideways through a turn at high speed without losing control. The race is judged on speed, angle, execution and style rather than just who finishes fastest.
I've learned that there are two primary techniques drivers use to initiate a drift: clutching and braking. Holding a drift instead of spinning out requires a lot of practice and the best drifters can execute multiple turns in a row, without the wheels gripping the road.
Drift racing was said to have its origins in the winding mountains of Japan in the 90s, and spread throughout the US and UK. In the movie Initial D, the mountain roads were the best drifting courses to elevate one's skills.
When drifting has finally reached the Philippines, PLDT myDSL latched on to the hype because it demonstrates the speed of its high velocity broadband internet service as well as the quick installation for subscribers.
As part of its successful campaign tour from Luzon, Visayas down to Mindanao, PLDT myDSL Speed Circuit brought to Davao a drifting exhibition at the Damosa Market Basket Parking Area where the crowd convened even when it rained for awhile.
This exciting event was a first for Dabawenyos who witnessed high-skilled drift stunts by the Lateral D Drift masters Alex Perez, Ron Bayona and Charlie Cruz of DMF Drift Burnt Rubber Productions.
Apart from the stunts, a car exhibit was graced by the lovely presence of actress Nancy Castiglione, who is part of the PLDT myDSL crew. On campus tours, she campaigns for myDSL QIK (Quick Install Kit), a do-it-yourself innovation that allows residential DSL applicants to configure their own DSL connections at home within three days approval of the application, thereby enjoying high-speed connection easily and fast.
Davao's Speed Circuit introduced two of PLDT myDSL's latest: Plan 990 and the Quick Install Kit. The most affordable bundle, Plan 990 UNLIMITED DSL + Landline gives subscribers unlimited broadband access and a PLDT landline for a very affordable price of P990 a month.
Early subscribers until April 15 can avail of freebies like free 1st month's subscription, free Installation and free PLDT to PLDT NDD calls. To avail of a PLDT myDSL, just visit any of the PLDT Business Office or any Connect Patrol booths in your area.
The PLDT myDSL fun campaign didn't end on mall and campus tours alone, it also brought DJ Kimosave, MC Nathan J, and the myDSL Supah Babes to after parties on March 14 and 15. By March 16, it gamely joined our Araw ng Dabaw parade as the line of sleek sports car passed me by on the road while I hosted the festivities on SkyCable TV and greeted Gary and his myDSL crew on air.
I've been a PLDT myDSL user for years, and am pretty much online most of the time with my work as a writer and artist. I have no complaints over its speed and connectivity, allowing me fast downloading and uploading time with graphics and multimedia laden projects for clients (not to mention my incessant blogging and the videos I download!). With its good service, "drifting" towards myDSL is the best choice. (Email the writer at jojiealcantara@pldtdsl.net and visit her website www.witerary.com)
