Friday, March 28, 2008 DCSCI to honor sportswriters thru Vic Sai Journalism Awards By Marianne Saberon-Abalyan
THE Davao City Sports Council, Inc., now headed by its new president, Davao City Councilor Peter T. Laviña, plans to institutionalize the Vic Sai Sports Journalism Awards to be staged for the first time on April 9, 2009.
Laviña, guesting at the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) forum at the Tower Inn Thursday, said the proposed project of the sports council will honor the group's late president Victorio Sai.
"But we will have to seek the consent of Vic Sai's family to use his name for the project," Laviña said.
He said the awards to be given are best sports news story, best sports column or feature story, best sports photograph and best sports television report.
"We will also give special citations for other outstanding work by a member of the mass media or media outlet in newspaper, magazine, radio television station, websites or blogs," Laviña said.
The awards aim to recognize excellent and outstanding efforts of sports journalists in print, broadcast or Internet media in chronicling sports events and/or featuring sports personalities, places and programs, according to the councilor.
"A panel of judges, not from DCSCI, will evaluate the submitted entries from the Davao Region that would cover the period of January 1 to December 31, 2008. The awards will be handed during the 63rd birthday anniversary of Mr. Vic Sai," Laviña said.
He said from the regional scope of the awards, they hope to expand it in Mindanao.
"We will look for corporate sponsors to make this project realized," Laviña said.
Plaques and cash prizes will be given away to the awardees.
DCSCI, under Sai's leadership, launched the annual So Kim Cheng Sports Foundation Sports Awards that recognizes outstanding efforts of Davao Region athletes in different fields of discipline.
The Vic Sai Sports Journalism Awards will yet become another milestone for the sports body that serves as an umbrella organization for local National Sports Associations (NSAs).
