By Marianne Saberon-Abalayan

JERWELL Andoy and Rowelyn Joy Acedo pocketed the juniors and kiddies titles, respectively, at the close of the Araw ng Dabaw Youth Chess Festival at the Gaisano South (GS) Citimall Sunday.

Andoy tallied 6.5 points in the seven-round Swiss System format juniors event to receive a cash prize of P1,200 from Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) senior executive assistant Joseph Encabo, who awarded the prizes to the winners.

Andoy bested University of Mindanao bet Adrian Dimakiling and Joe Art Capatan who each scored identical six points. Dimakiling, however, defeated Capatan via the tiebreak, 31-.85-28.5, to grab the runner-up honors and the P700. Capatan settled for the third place prize of P500.

Jerwin Yabut, Kenneth Ihalas, and Anthony Mosqueda placed fourth to sixth in the chessfest organized as part of the Araw ng Dabaw sports festival spearheaded by the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office in coordination with the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Southern Mindanao.

The Palarong Pambansa-bound Acedo, meanwhile, earned 4.5 points in the kiddies' event along with James Apas but prevailed over the latter via the tiebreak to win the title and P700 cash.

Runner-up Apas claimed P500 while Alfred Zamora got P400. Bhing Joel Gimony, Starjean Candia, Alvin Acas and Nathaniel Yngayo took the next four spots to receive P200 each from sponsoring PSC.

Acedo, meanwhile, left for Manila to compete in the National Age-Group Chess Championships that unfolds Tuesday until Friday. She will then return to Mati to resume training for the Palaro set April 20 to 26 in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.
