Councilor urges Senate, Congress to expedite workers' tax exempt

THE Davao City council on Tuesday passed a resolution urging both houses of Senate and Congress to immediately act on pending bills aimed at exempting private sector workers receiving minimum wage and public employees with salary grade 1 to 3 from payment of income taxes.

Councilor Peter Laviña, proponent of the said resolution, said there is an urgent need to pass these pieces of legislation to help alleviate the plight of lowly workers who are directly suffering from the impact of rising prices and the shrinking of the purchasing value of their income.

Laviña said this is based on the policy of the state and the government to provide benefits and incentives to workers especially those who earn less.

"The Labor Day on May 1 would be a good occasion for the start of the implementation of these proposed laws," he said.

Since it is harder for the government to pass legislations for wage increase, Laviña said this is a viable alternative. (GLP)
