Malita's Retanal rules in Panabo

NATIONAL Master (NM) Elwin Retanal of Malita, Davao del Sur bagged the champion's purse of P3,000 at the recently concluded Araw ng Panabo Open Chess Tournament held at the Panabo Chess Club.

Retanal tallied 4.5 points to beat four point scorers Samuel Yu, Jimmy Dano, Reynaldo Quiñones and Araw ng Dabaw open chess champion Henry Roger Lopez who shared the second to sixth spots.

Finishing behind were Reynaldo Abba, Mohammad Sacar, Jimmy Hamiron, Gil Rodis and Gerald Cavan.

Yu of Davao City went home with P2,000 while fellow Dabawenyos Dano and Quiñones along with Lopez received P1,000, P700 and P500, respectively.

The fifth to 10th placers got consolation prizes of P200 each in the one-day five-round Swiss System format tournament.

The National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Southern Mindanao sanctioned the event. (MLSA)
