Davao's Cansino bags 16-under crown in tennis event

DAVAO City's Juan Paolo Cansino spanked Carl Cinco, 6-2, 6-2, to annex the boys' 16-under crown at the close of the 2008 Head Junior Satellite Circuit second leg held at the Nazareth Tennis Courts in Cagayan de Oro City Sunday.

Cansino, RP's number 2 netter in the boys division, who is bound to represent the country in the World Junior Tennis Oceania/Pacific Qualifying in Shenzhen, China on April 14 to 19, later lost the boys' 14-under title when he retired against Cagayan de Oro's Francis Derrick Alcantara due to leg cramps.

Alcantara's younger brother, Francis Edilbert, also bagged a crown after whipping Espencer Sagrado, 6-1, 6-4, in the boys' 12-under finals clash while Thomas Sebastian of Cebu hacked out a 6-3, 7-5 win over Karl Ubalde of Cebu in the 10-under unisex.

Andrew Bering turned back Robert Malalis, 6-4, 6-0, in their boys' 18-under titular clash in the tour sanctioned by Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) and sponsored by Dynamic Sports Corporation.

Top-seed Macy Solon of Dumaguete City followed up her Davao leg title with a thrilling 4-6, 6-1, 10-2 victory over Honey Mae Guilles in the girls' 18-under.

Guilles captured the girls' 16-under crown at the expense of Cebu's Kristelmae Buenacosa, 6-4, 6-4, 10-8, while Lynette Palasan slapped Yzel Grace Ilisan, 6-4, 6-2, in the girls' 14-under.

The girls' 12-under title went to Kendies Thea Malalis who overwhelmed Lykes Batao, 6-0, 6-0.

Nazareth Tennis Club president Alvin Garcia and vice president Jonel Llavore awarded the prizes to the champions and runners up of the netfest. The winners also earned Philta ranking points.

The Dumaguete City leg of the tour opens Wednesday and will end on Friday. (MLSA)
