Tuesday, April 15, 2008 Semddoc to join strike against price increases By Carlo P. Mallo
ONE of Davao Region's biggest transport groups is set to join the planned transport strike this month to oppose the almost weekly price hikes.
Thus said Manuel Duran, president of the South Eastern Mindanao Diversified Drivers-Operators Cooperative (Semddoc), in Monday's Kapehan sa Dabaw, adding that 7,000 strong membership will take part in the planned transport strike.
"The prices of oil and other commodities have continually increased," Duran said in the local dialect.
Transport groups all over the country have proposed a nationwide strike in order to put a stop to the increase in oil prices and other commodities in the country.
For this year alone, oil prices have increased more than seven times, usually with increases ranging from P1 to P0.50.
"Dili namo kaya na ang kita sa driver sa gasolinahan na lang tanan maadto (We cannot bear that the earnings of the drivers will only go to the gasoline stations)," Duran said.
One of the proposals of the transport group is for the government to lift the oil deregulation law, and other taxes imposed on imported commodities. (CPM)
