Davraa athletes eye good finish

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan -- The Davao Regional Athletic Association (Davraa) promised to put up a good fight and a better finish in the 2008 Palarong Pambansa that opens Saturday at the Ramon V. Mitra Jr. Sports Complex here.

Department of Education (DepEd) regional director Susanna Teresa Estigoy, in a phone interview with Sun.Star Davao said: "Our team started training on March 22. I believe that our athletes will put up a good fight and give their best in every game."

Estigoy said the team is rooting on the secondary boys boxing team "that had kept the championship for past three years. I think our boxers are in good shape and are ready to defend the title again this year."

Davraa, according to her, will award cash incentives to gold, silver and bronze medalists in both individual and team events of the annual meet for elementary and secondary athletes.

"Whoever wins his or her first game will be given a minimal incentive but it will be greater when they win a gold or a championship," Estigoy said.

She, however, said they will have yet to determine the amount to be given to the medalists.

"The coaches look forward to the incentives and so do our athletes. I think all the other regions are also doing the same thing. This will further boost their morale and inspire them to bring honor to the region," Estigoy said.

Davraa placed seventh in both elementary and secondary divisions in the Koronadal edition of the Palaro last year.

"Our volleyball teams are also strong and may even pull off surprises this year. Basing in our performance last year, we hope to also improve our finish in other events," Estigoy said. (MLSA)
