THAT was the provocative title of an exhibit of paintings done by international and multi-awarded artist Rene Robles at the GenLuna Gallery. It was opened on March 27 by environmentalist Davao City Councilor Leo Avila.
The artist's 22 paintings on exhibit look fresh and bold with often simple, yet highly stimulating subjects coming together in strong, dynamic compositions.
His painting shows the effect of masses of colors and blotches of pigments interspersed with a larger central image, which mirrors life's many twists and turns.
Viewing his audacious and rhythmic works gives an impression that Rene Robles is an accomplished artist. He has exhibited extensively in the US, Europe and Asia.
He is the first and only Filipino to exhibit at the Kunst Und Ausstellungshalle Museum in Bonn, Germany in 1995 and at the Museo Nacional de Antropologia in Madrid in 1997. He has won 3 "Awards of Excellence" from the Pastel Society of the West Coast, California in 1994, the Manhattan Arts Magazine International Competition, New York in 1993 and the Somerset County Heritage and Cultural Commission, New Jersey in 1992. He also won the "International Award" from the United Pastelists of American/Oil Pastel Association Juried Competition in 1992 and a 2nd Prize in Black & White Juried Exhibition, Pallette Place Gallery, USA.
No wonder his works are widely collected by the rich and famous that include the Grand Chancellor Couesnogle of the Vatican, King Juan Carlos I of Spain, King Khalid of Saudi Arabia, Malcolm Forbes Jr., and President Bill Clinton.
Indeed, it was a rare opportunity for me to gaze at the works of a modern master. It evoked thoughts that were truly as private as my experiences. For those who would like to view Rene Robles' art, Private as Thought is still on exhibit today at the GenLuna Gallery, 90 Medical School Drive.
