Tuesday, April 29, 2008 Broadcaster's lawyers file motion for appearance
LAWYERS of convicted broadcaster Alex Adonis submitted a motion for appearance before Regional Trial Court Branch 17 Presiding Judge Renato A. Fuentes.
In a motion, lawyers Harry Roque and Romel Bagares said "they were not able to formally enter their appearance in the instant proceeding because of the difficulty of obtaining a conforme from the accused who is presently serving his sentence at the Davao Penal Colony."
In the same motion, they requested that they be furnished with notices and other legal updates in connection with the case.
Fuentes earlier scheduled the hearing of the motion to re-open the case at 8:30 a.m. of May 2.
Alex Adonis was convicted of libel for maligning Davao City 1st District Representative Prospero Nograles in his radio program in July 2001. Adonis's co-respondent, General Santos station manager Dan Vicente, was acquitted.
The libel case stemmed from the "Burlesk King" scandal that allegedly refer to Nograles and a former television program host.
Adonis' lawyers earlier submitted a communication to the United Nations Human Rights Committee challenging the legality of libel in the Philippines. (RMH)
