After debacle, DepEd turns to PSC for help

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan -- After the debacle at the just-concluded 2008 Palarong Pambansa here, the Davao Regional Athletic Association (Davraa) will forge a tie-up with the Philippine Sports Commission to strengthen its bid in the sports event next year.

Department of Education (DepEd) Regional Director Susanna Teresa Estigoy said they will continue to work on their grassroots school-based development program.

"We will ask the local government units (LGUs) to help us. We will also work with the PSC in the technical aspect," Estigoy said.

Estigoy, in an interview during the fellowship dinner at the Davraa quarters at the Palawan Polytechnic College Friday, said she has talked to PSC chairman William "Butch" Ramirez obout the matter.

"He said he's willing to help us. The PSC will train our teachers and coaches to be more qualified to train our athletes. We're very happy for this help from the PSC chairman," Estigoy said.

Davraa athletic manager Fidel Japos earlier said the lack of qualified trainors and sports facilities hurt the region's campaign in the Palaro. Davraa placed sixth, from seventh last year, in the secondary division and dropped to ninth from the eighth spot in the elementary event.

"We will seek help from the LGUs to put up sporting equipment in our schools where our athletes can train," Estigoy said. (MLSA)
