Wednesday, April 30, 2008 Ocean month starts with 'solo kayak'
THE celebration of the Ocean Month is ushered in by the arrival of the solo kayak expedition in Punta Dumalag, Matina Aplaya, in Davao City on May 1.
City Councilor Leonardo R. Avila III said the kayak expedition by paddler Arnel Gabutero, a member of the Philippines Canoe/Kayak Federation, started off from Barangay New Argao in Malita, Davao del Sur Tuesday for a 160-kilometer paddle.
New Argao is the home of the endangered dugong, while Punta Dumalag is the location of the Davao City marine turtle sanctuary and hatchery.
Dubbed as "Save the Dugong, Save the Pawikan, Save the Gulf campaign," Avila said the solo kayak expedition intends to attract attention and raise awareness among the people on how important it is to care for the oceans, including the Davao Gulf.
The expedition is expected to arrive at Punta Dumalag on May 1, around 2 p.m.
A support team that will back up Gabutero during the expedition will monitor the entire expedition. (CPM)
