City council to put seal on Fisheries Code Tuesday

THE proposed Fisheries Code of Davao City is set for third and final reading in Tuesday's regular session.

The proposed Fisheries Code is the local version of Republic Act (RA) 8550, otherwise known as the Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998.

RA 8550 aims to provide measures to develop, manage and conserve the country's fisheries and aquatic resources. Its main consideration is food security.

The proposed code, on the other hand, includes a flexible policy towards the attainment of food security that should be adopted in response to changes in demographic trends for fish, emerging trends in the trade of fish and other aquatic products in domestic and international markets.

It also limits the access to the fishery and aquatic resources of the city for the exclusive use and enjoyment of municipal fisher folk.

The proposal also facilitates the establishment of a "bagsakan" or trading center where fishermen can sell their catch directly to the consumers.

A council is tasked to monitor the implementation of the law and its programs. (GLP)
