By Charles Raymond A. Maxey

THE Bankers Cup basketball tournament got off to a rousing start for defending champion Metrobank and former titlist Plantersbank Saturday at the Evergold Gym in Obrero, Davao City.

The Metrobank dribblers carved out a tough 83-79 overtime win over BPI to start their title-retention campaign on a bright note, while Plantersbank staged a searing rally in the fourth quarter to hack out an 82-63 victory over Citibank.

Coach of Plantersbank is Nhoy Pido of PacMan.

Banco de Oro, meanwhile, defeated RBC, 86-83, to join the early winners in the eight-team field, which uses a double round robin in the elimination phase.

Jeff Solidum was the best performer for Metrobank with 25 points. He was backed by Te Eng Fo's 20 and Pena's nine markers.

Buenaventura, Costan, and Villanueva engineered the fight-back for the Plantersbank cagers, the 2006 champion, on the way to scoring the widest winning margin of 19 points.

BDO relied on the outside sniping of Nilo Temporal, who finished with 25 points, including a career high seven three-pointers.
