Saturday, May 10, 2008 'Butchoy' may bring floods, landslides
WITH a tropical storm bringing rains to Southern Mindanao and the eastern coast of Mindanao and the Visayas, the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council-Southern Mindanao has issued warning for possible flashfloods and landslides.
As of noon Friday, the active low pressure area was already classified by the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) as a tropical storm dubbed "Butchoy."
In his warning, Chief Superintendent Andres Caro II said that the weather disturbance is expected to bring in the southwest monsoon and rains. "It may trigger landslides and flashfloods in the low-lying areas and nearby mountain slopes," he said.
The warning added that an above normal rainfall can be expected over the Davao Region and over the entire Visayas and Mindanao areas.
Caro has also directed all the Local Disaster Coordinating Councils to undertake monitoring and precautionary measures to prepare the people for any untoward incident that may be brought by the tropical storm.
He also said the respective disaster response teams should be placed on heightened alert at all times. (CPM/With Press release)
