By Jojie Alcantara

IN OBSERVANCE of the Earth Hour, Matina Town Square (MTS) supported its cause twice during the crusade for awareness of global warming by turning off the lights from 8-9 p.m. on March 29 and another on April 22.

All the tenants in the compound opened with business as usual as candles lit up their outlets. Taboan, the entertainment center, lighted the whole place with candles on each table.

Customers still dined while being entertained by the performances of the Kaliwat Theater Collective, whose music and dances embrace the Mindanaoan culture and spirit.

The country participated in the biggest display of solidarity against climate change, as more than 50 major Philippine cities and towns switched off their lights to join the rest of the world for Earth Hour.

Earth Hour Philippines was a joint initiative of WWF, the Department of Energy, Presidential Task Force on Climate Change, Green Army, Earthday Network and Philips Lighting Systems, among other partners.

According to news, WWF and Meralco estimate the participation of more than a million Filipinos, saving 56MWh of energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 30-tonnes in Luzon alone -- equivalent to shutting down an entire coal-fired powerplant.
