SK Sportsfest opens Saturday

SOME 3,500 athletes from Davao City's 110 barangays will see action in the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Summer Sportsfest `08, which opens at 8 a.m. on Saturday at the Almendras Gym.

SK Davao City president Halila Sudagar said the sportsfest will have basketball, men's and women's volleyball, chess, badminton, athletics and taekwondo.

The SK event is dubbed "Magdula Ta Para Iwas Droga" and aims to promote sports awareness and development among the city's youth, according to the youngest member of the City Council of Davao City.

"This is a good venue for our Dabawenyo youth athletes to learn and improve their skills and prevent them from the lure of bad influences like drug abuse," Sudagar said during Thursday's regular Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn.

The meet, which will culminate on June 7, is designed for 15 to 18 years old.

Sudagar's sports consultant, Darren Evangelista of the Evangelista Aquatics and Sports Management, said basketball and volleyball will be played in the barangays while chess at the Gaisano South (GS) Citimall, athletics at the Davao City National High School on May 23 to 25, badminton at the 4Play Badminton Gym.

The roster of events, according to Sudagar, was the result of her consultative meeting with the barangay SK chairpersons. (MLSA)
