COTABATO CITY -- A still unidentified suspect lobbed a fragmentation grenade inside a cockpit in Barangay Rosary Heights-13 here that injured a security guard patrolling the area, around 9:45 p.m. Friday.
The guard, identified only in his alias as "Pitik", sustained serious injuries on his back.
Pitik was doing his routine patrol in the area of the Cotabato Square Garden, about half a hectare, when the suspect, onboard a motorcycle, lobbed the grenade and exploded.
The suspect fled immediately towards Barangay Notre Dame Village, a witness said.
Investigators said the motive could be extortion; yet, no one from the establishment is willing to tell the police.
Reports reaching the Cotabato City Philippine National Police (PNP) said the cockpit owner has been receiving extortion threats from armed groups.
But they do not discount the possibility that personal motive could be behind the grenade throwing.
The guard, reports said, had a heated altercation with a resident of the place that frequents the cockpit. (MCM)
