Wednesday, May 21, 2008 Shrine Hills developers urged to submit measures By Carlo P. Mallo
REAL estate developers who have projects at Shrine Hills in Matina, Davao City are now required by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Southern Mindanao to submit a comprehensive report on the geo-hazards in their respective area.
In an interview Friday with MGB Southern Mindanao acting regional director Edilberto Arreza, he said the development works in the area have "disturbed the stability" of the limestone hills.
Arreza said the alteration of the topography of the area would have adverse effects unless mitigating measures are put in place.
"The construction of subdivisions, the paving of the road, the changes and development introduced have all disturbed the stability of the soil in the area," Arreza said.
Multiple high-end real estate developments at Shrine Hills are now ongoing amidst the protest of some sectors. The panoramic view that can be seen from the hills is one of the factors why the area is a priced jewel of real estate.
Among the threats identified by MGB Southern Mindanao is the possibility of ground movement and ground subsidence, more commonly known as sink holes. The threat varies, depending on the development introduced in the area.
