Wednesday, May 21, 2008 Abducted Manero soon to be freed? By Ben O. Tesiorna
A MILITARY official believes that retired Master Sergeant Jose Manero, who was abducted by New People's Army (NPA) rebels more than a week ago, will soon be released.
The colonel, who is formerly assigned in Davao City, said the sudden "silence" between the NPA and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) regarding details of the rescue effort for Manero is an indication there are some negotiations for the safe release of the victim.
He said the rebels could also be having second thoughts about holding Manero for long since they know that the victim's brothers, Edel and Norberto, are pursuing them.
"Takot na lang ng mga rebelde sa mga Manero (The rebels are afraid of the Maneros)," the colonel said.
He said that anytime this week, Manero might be released.
He clarified though that his statement is not based on facts but merely on assumptions and analysis on how things are concerning the abduction of Manero.
Many other military officials also believe that Manero will soon be freed by the rebel group led by Kumander Parago. They are one in saying that the Manero brothers are not kidding when they vowed to retaliate, at all cost, if something bad happens to their brother.
The death of militant leader Celso Pojas in Ma-a last week is suspected of being related to the abduction of Manero. The militants, however, dismissed this theory, and accused the military of having a hand in the death of Pojas.
