Friday, May 23, 2008 Rebels torch truck of bananas By Ben O. Tesiorna
ATROCITIES committed by suspected members of the New People's Army (NPA) continue in the province of Compostela Valley after they burned a truckload of bananas on Tuesday.
Reports reaching Sun.Star Davao showed that the rebels blocked the Dole Philippines Co. truck on a road near New Bataan late Tuesday and ordered the driver out of the vehicle.
The rebels then set the truck on fire along with its cargo of bananas. The unidentified driver was, however, unharmed.
The rebels allegedly informed the driver that Dolefil is punished for not paying revolutionary taxes.
Last month, the rebels set fire another banana truck in the nearby town of Mawab and abducted a security consultant to a Davao farm owned by one of the country's biggest banana farmers.
Earlier that day, rebels also encountered Army soldiers in Pasian, Monkayo resulting to the wounding of two members of the 102 Division Reconnaissance Company.
