Saturday, May 24, 2008 PRO 11 uncovers threat vs MNLF By Carlo P. Mallo
A THREAT against the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) has reportedly been uncovered but details are still kept from the public.
Chief Superintendent Andres Caro II, director of the Police Regional Office (PRO) Southern Mindanao, has admitted that there are indeed threats against MNLF, whose more than 20,000 members are reportedly in Davao City Saturday for the 2nd Mindanao Leadership Peace Summit that will be graced by MNLF chair Nur Misuari.
"But as for the details, there is nothing more that I can divulge," Caro said in an interview after a meeting with security officials of Davao City and top officials of the MNLF at the Davao City Police Office Friday morning.
Caro assured though that no threat on the city has been reported.
"There is none reported so far," Caro added. "We are on heightened alert right now, and we are closely monitoring the entry and exit points of the city."
It has been agreed between the police and the MNLF that the Muslim group will not be bringing in firearms into the city, and that the group will follow the rules set forth.
Meanwhile, the local chapter of the MNLF in Davao City said the number of delegates who will arrive Saturday might reach 20,000 due to the number of members who want to see Misuari.
"We wanted to see him when he's on house arrest in Manila, but we could not," said Rolando Aziz Olamit, vice chair of the MNLF group in Davao City. "We will show the world that the Bangsamoro people are united."
The group also expressed their apologies to the people of Davao City who may have been startled with the number of MNLF personnel around the city.
"We appeal and apologize to the Dabawenyos," Rexall Kaalim, member of the technical working group of the MNLF, told reporters Friday.
