City Council body to hear bid for seats, canopies

THE City Council committee on tourism will hear the proposed placement of canopies and seats at the grounds of Davao International Airport (DIA) on Thursday.

The proposal was spurred by Councilor Edgar Ibuyan's privilege speech last month on the absence of these facilities at the airport.

Ibuyan himself went to the airport two weeks ago to make an ocular inspection and to take picture of the dire straits of the airport grounds. This will be shown to the committee through a Powerpoint presentation.

In a preview Tuesday, the pictures did not only show people sitting in the gutter under the heat of the sun while waiting for arrivals but also unweeded and uncleared canals.

This, Ibuyan said, pose as threats to public health.

"The reasoning that these facilities were not installed by the Air Transportation Office (ATO) due to the 2003 bombing of the waiting shed of the old airport is shallow since the present airport is now fully secured," Ibuyan said.

He added that it is the airport authorities' duty to provide facilities to protect the health and welfare of the people at the airport. (GLP)
