Sunday, June 08, 2008 Councilors seek usage policy on alternative vehicles
THE Davao City council requested Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to consider creating a local policy that would encourage the use of alternative vehicles through a resolution passed Tuesday under suspended rules.
Councilor Pilar Braga, proponent of the resolution, cited the escalating prices of diesel and gasoline, as well as the issue of global warming as basis for the proposal.
"There is too much emission of carbon monoxide that is harming the earth's climate and affecting lifecycle of men, animals and plants, thus there is a need to minimize, if not totally eradicate, pollution coming from fossil fuel," Braga said.
She added that the use of electric vehicles, which are noise-free, clean, maintenance-free, and inexpensive, is indeed a solution.
"Local governments such as Makati, Baguio, Bacolod, and Cebu have already taken steps to make it as a matter of policy to use e-vehicles considering that it is not only environment-friendly but also more cost-efficient," Braga said. (GLP)
