Wednesday, June 11, 2008 Council bars local traders from reselling rice
GRAINS traders operating in Davao City are not allowed to sell large volumes of rice to groups or individuals outside the city, as has been the practice here.
This is provided in the last of three resolutions passed under suspended rules by the Davao City Council Tuesday, as councilors clamored for a solution to the skyrocketing prices and tight supply of rice.
The move was spurred by the statement of Metro Davao Grains Traders president Juanito Loyola that traders outside Davao City are buying stocks here.
"The city has never been a rice producer but since we are the ones getting stocks from Luzon, they are buying from us," Loyola said.
In a separate resolution, the National Food Authority (NFA) was asked to double its outlets in the city as well as increase the allocation for each outlet. These measures, however, were implemented by the NFA after last Wednesday's discussion based on NFA General Manager Lorenzo Camayang's Tuesday report.
The body also asked NFA and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to immediately process the applications for at least two outlets per barangay as identified by the barangay captains and endorsed by the City Government. (GLP)
