UM teams in beach volleyball

TWO University of Mindanao (UM)-bannered Evangelista Aquatics and Sports Management (EASM) teams will see action in the Dapitan City National Women's Beach Volleyball Tournament slated June 19 to 22 at the Long Beach of Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte.

EASM's Darren Evangelista, who guested at the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn Thursday, said he's sponsoring the two teams coming from Davao City to the national event that features the best beach volleyball teams in the country.

"I picked them based on their performances in recent competitions," Evangelista said.

He bared that EASM first team is powered by recently crowned Tagum Beach Volleyball champion performers Quielle Hernandez, 17, and Jennifer Conde, 20, while the second team is composed of Boracay Nestea National Beach Volleyball finalists Janice Arnaiz and 21-year-old Maricel Cabus.

In an interview after the DSA Forum, the third-year AB English student Hernandez said in the vernacular: "We still need to practice harder because we will be up against top teams from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao."

"I've heard that some teams that we played against in Boracay will also be there, at least we know who we are going up against. We still lack practice but we will catch up," Arnaiz said.

Evangelista added that De La Salle University, Bacolod, Silliman Foundation University of Dumaguete and Southwestern University of Cebu are among the top teams seeing action in the event organized through the joint efforts of the Dapitan City Tourism Council, Department of Tourism, City Government of Dapitan, and Philippine Sports Commission.

He said Representative Cesar Jalosjos, who is committee chair of youth and sports in the House of Representatives, initiated the activity that is part of Dapitan's charter anniversary celebration.
