Landslide kills 1 in Lake Sebu
By Ben O. Tesiorna

A LANDSLIDE killed a man in Barangay Denlag, Lake Sebu in the province of South Cotabato on Saturday.

It took one day for rescuers to retrieve the body of a certain Almodiente after being buried under tons of mud and earth.

Authorities said the heavy rain in the area since late last week softened the soil in the mountain and triggered the landslide.

Several residents in the area also evacuated to safer places.

The Philippine Army meantime has continued its rescue operation in several affected provinces and region by typhoon Frank (international codename: Fengshen).

In neighboring Surallah, 13 more families have been displaced by the overflowing Allah River.

In Libungan, Cotabato, 1,300 families were safely evacuated and about 3,000 hectares of farms were damaged. Ten bridges were also damaged by the floodwaters.

In North Upi, province of Sultan Kudarat, troops of the 6th Infantry Division continue to conduct search and rescue operations, as vast areas remain inundated.

Major Armand Rico, spokesperson of the Eastern Mindanao Command, said that at least 143 families have been evacuated and are temporarily seeking shelter at the Nuro Municipal Gym in North Upi.

Rico added that the local government unit of North Upi has already extended assistance to the evacuees by proving relief goods.

"Troops from the 38th Infantry Battalion are conducting search and rescue operations to retrieve missing individuals," Rico said.

Knee-deep to waist-deep waters inundated most of Central Mindanao after the Rio Grande de Mindanao overflowed last Saturday. The floods damaged at least 20,000 houses. (With CPM)
