Escudero also gunning for top positions

SENATOR Francis "Chiz" Escudero is not ready to declare his plans for the 2010 Presidential elections, but he has dropped enough hints to indicate that he is eyeing the top posts at stake.

"Meron na ako lahat nung ibang qualifications, isa na lang ang kulang (I have all other qualifications, I only lack one more)," Escudero said.

The qualification that he lacks is age, as he will still turn 40 on October 10, 2009.

"It is only then that I am able to satisfy all the requirements, sa ngayon may kulang pa," Escudero said in an interview Friday.

The 1987 Constitution provides that a candidate for the post of the President or Vice President of the Philippines must be able to comply with the following qualifications: natural born citizen of the Philippines, a registered voter, able to read and write, at least 40 years of age on the day of the election, and a resident of the Philippines for at least 10 years immediately preceding such elections.

However, the 38-year-old senator did not specify as to which of the two positions he would be aiming for in the 2010 Presidential polls. But, a close friend of Escudero said that he (Escudero) would definitely be running for a higher office than that of the Senate.

Other than Escudero, the names of Senate President Manuel Villar and Senator Mar Roxas have also floated as possible candidates of the United Opposition in the coming elections. (CPM)
