DepEd employee shot dead

KIDAPAWAN CITY -- An employee of the Department of Education (DepEd) in North Cotabato was shot dead by a member of the Special Action Force (SAF) at the height of their heated argument while inside the provincial capitol compound in Barangay Amas here, around 5:30 p.m., Friday.

Kidapawan City police chief Leo Ajero identified the victim as Rudy Bustamante, 40, of Sandawa Homes Phase 1 and clerk at DepEd's North Cotabato Schools Division office.

The suspect, 30-year-old PO1 Sherwin Amihan of the Philippine National Police's SAF, was assigned at the North Cotabato provincial police office.

Ajero said the suspect was still under the influence of liquor when his company commander turned him over to the station for investigation.

At the police station, Amihan admitted he shot dead Bustamante while he was investigating him on suspicion that he was involved in gun stealing.

Ajero also said the suspect told him that the victim had a gun inside his car. But when they searched the vehicle, they found nothing.

"I think Amihan was just making an alibi. But whatever his reasons for killing Bustamante, he must face the consequences of his act," said Ajero.

Ajero said they are now readying charges against Amihan, who is now locked up at Kidapawan police station. (Malu Cadelina Manar)
