Sunday, June 29, 2008 Batucan, Dimakiling win Primovit chess
HEAVY favorites Fide Master John Ray Batucan and Adrian Dimakiling bagged titles at the close of the 2008 Primovit and Gaisano South Citimall Rapid Age-Group Chess Championships at the GS Citimall entertainment center Saturday.
Asean Age-Group Chess Championships twin gold medalist Batucan, a sixth-grader at the Don Juan dela Cruz Elementary School in Toril, beat fellow 4.5 scorer Aglipay Oberio of the Nieves Villarica team, vie tiebreak, 14-12.5, to emerge champion in under-14.
F. Bangoy National High School's Danilo Engay Jr. and Trade Tagum National High School's Kenneth Tabada grabbed the third and fourth spots, respectively, after toting 3.5 each.
Dimakiling, a varsity scholar at the University of Mindanao, garnered 4.5 points to pocket the under-18 crown while his teammate Anthony Mosqueda settled for the runner-up honors with four points.
Dimakiling beat Jay Bulication of the Jose Maria College in the final fifth round of the Swiss System format chessfest. The latter settled for fourth with 3.5 points while Brokenshire College's Rodel Alsado, who also had similar output, came third.
In under-16, Carmen National High School's Ronnel Alsado brought home the trophy and the P3,500 cash prize as he scored perfect five points.
Lady chesser Mary Israel Palero of the Holy Cross of Davao College, meanwhile, settled for the runner-up honors and the P2,000 purse.
The final two matches of the under-12 category were still being played as of this writing Saturday. (MLSA)
