BFAR sets meeting with bangus fish cage operators, agents

A MEETING with the milkfish transshipment agents, fish cage and fishpond operators in Davao Region will be set by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Southern Mindanao anytime this week.

BFAR regional director George Campeon said the meeting's principal objective is to identify the volume requirement of the transshipment agents and fish cage and fishpond operators with regards to milkfish fingerling supply.

"We need to be assured that we can supply everybody. The meeting is in order for me to know the volume requirement of operators and agents in Samal, Tagabuli in Sta. Cruz, Malalag, Davao del Sur, and Panabo in Davao del Norte," Campeon said.

Campeon said the region has enough supply of milkfish, adding that the maximum milkfish production of the region is placed at two to three million metric tons every quarter.

He also said milkfish production is one of the contributors in the increase in the fisheries production output of the region other than tilapia, hito, and seaweeds.

"We have yet to come up with production output for the second quarter, but the fisheries production has increased, more on aquaculture," Campeon said.

The increase in the aquaculture sub-sector, he said, was also because of the established mariculture parks throughout the region and the increasing production of species in the freshwater areas.

"Our tilapia and hito production in Carmen and in Los Amigos, respectively is increasing," he added. (JGRS)
