Arroyo endorses natural fiber plant

EVEN as the country has yet to reassess its rice productivity after Typhoon Frank (international codename: Fengshen) ravaged across 45 provinces in the Visayas and Luzon, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is already endorsing a new kind of plant that Filipinos can cultivate and earn dollars from.

In her speech during the 41st Founding Anniversary of Davao del Sur, Arroyo said that based on her interactions with the businessmen in the United States, one product they have wanted to import more are the natural fibers, which can be gathered from wild grass.

"The problem is that these are grown in the wild, there is no stable supply of it," the President said.

She explained that there is no stable source of natural fibers because the plant is not being cultivated.

Arroyo said Target, a chain of retail stores throughout the United States, was the one who brought up the idea of wanting a stable supply of the natural fibers, which can be obtained from dried natural grass.

As to what kind of grass, the President did not specify. All she said was, "We want to share with the provinces what we have reaped from our 10-day official visit to the United States." (CPM)
