Saturday, July 05, 2008 Arroyo to speak during 8th Asean S&T Week
PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will speak during the opening program of the 8th Asean Science and Technology Week (ASTW), which the Philippines hosts this year through the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).
ASTW coincides with the 50th anniversary of DOST and the country's annual celebration of the National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) on July 7 at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.
The President confirmed that Science and technology plays a key role in the development of the country, while developments and innovations done by DOST spur progress and open new opportunities to improve the Filipinos' quality of living.
The NSTW and the ASTW will be a "great opportunity to remind the people and keep them aware of the latest breakthroughs in the field and their implications in daily living," said Arroyo.
One of the highlights during the ASTW and NSTW is the Asean Science and Technology Awards awarding ceremonies. It is to encourage and promote excellence among Asean scientists and technologists, as well as strengthen cooperation amongst Asean countries in the field of science and technology.
Other activities include the annual Science and Technology Fair that will showcase technologies that DOST developed or supported with applications that meet domestic industrial and consumer needs.
Also on July 7, DOST-Southern Mindanao will be having a live video coverage of the 8th ASTW and NSTW Opening Ceremonies and a video press conference at DOST's conference room at 9 a.m.
