Saturday, July 05, 2008 Banana sector will have to adjust, DCCCI prexy
EVEN before the Court of Appeals could hand out its decision on the constitutionality of the Aerial Spray Ban Ordinance in Davao City, the president of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industries Inc. (DCCCII) believes the banana industry will have to make adjustments one way or another.
Simeon Marfori, president of the DCCCII, however refused to comment on whether the ordinance is indeed unconstitutional as claimed by the Pilipino Banana Growers and Exporters Association (PBGEA).
Various stakeholders of the multi-billion dollar banana exporting industry in Davao City is holding its breath, as they await the decision of the Court of Appeals on the case.
Those who favor the ordinance, the City Government of Davao, and various environmental organizations are also waiting for the court decision.
Moreover, Marfori added that the banana industry is already suffering due to the unstable exchange rate of the Philippine peso against the US Dollar.
"And mababa ang presyo ng saging ngayon (The selling price of bananas is low these days)," Marfori said. (CPM)
