Sunday, July 06, 2008 Remembering By Stella A. Estremera
A PT, a diver, an RN, a Jaycee, a brother DeMolay, a good friend to all... the chrome letters spelled on a marble marker placed 80 feet underwater at the second pinnacle off Big Ligid in the Island Garden City of Samal.
The marker is a memorial to diver Edwin F. Isidro, who was lost and never found during a fun dive turned tragic on July 3, 2004. Edwin was 28 then and was the life of any party.
Last Thursday, a group of 27 divers that included those from the Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Navy, and Philippine Air Force, gathered with Edwin's family and friends to remember him and bring down two markers at the pinnacle rocks, the area the group of divers in 2004 were descending towards when strong, swirling current hit them.
One marker simply reads Edwin's Point. But its stark white granite background and engraved black letters make it visible from afar as one approaches the challenging pinnacle noted for its "washing machine" current.
On the wall across the second pinnacle is laid the marble marker giving a glimpse into who Edwin was -- "A PT, a diver, an RN, a Jaycee, a brother DeMolay, a good friend to all..."
