Sunday, July 06, 2008 Rebels kill councilman in Compostela Valley By Ben O. Tesiorna
A BARANGAY kagawad was shot and killed by two suspected rebels in Nabunturan Friday morning, a day after a grenade was lobbed at a bakeshop in the same town that killed three people.
Police identified the victim as Noli Llanos of Barangay Mipangi of Nabunturan town in Compostela Valley.
Llanos was shot by two gunmen believed to be members of the Special Partisan Unit (Sparu) of the New People's Army (NPA) around 8:30 a.m. of July 4.
The suspects readily sped off on board a motorcycle after the incident.
Military authorities said the rebel group has recently been resorting to assassinating barangay officials, pastors, and ordinary civilians for their refusal to its extortion demands.
