Mendoza: The National Disaster Consciousness Month
By Lorenzo E. Mendoza
The Scribe's Corner

WITH still a number of low performing schools both in the elementary and secondary levels based on the latest results of the National Achievement Test (NAT), DepEd-11 regional director Susana Teresa B. Estigoy with the collaboration of all the chiefs of divisions, sections and units with their supervisors and support staff will come up with a Comprehensive Intervention Package for school year 2008-2009.

The low Net Enrolment Ratio or the participation rate has also caused an alarm not only to this region but also throughout the country and triggered DepEd Secretary Jesli A. Lapus to issue a DepED Order and series of advisories and follow up memoranda to arrest the skidding participation rate in the public schools.

This is a department effort and everyone is enjoined to extend a hand to let all school-aged children to be in school.

Reducing the work load of the erstwhile Management Information System (MIS) manager Ricardo Guinto and letting him concentrate in the kind of work he truly enjoys doing, that of being the Regional ICT Coordinator (technical) and now as Regional Web Master is a welcome respite to both the MIS and the DepEd-11 website.

Edgar Castigon now call the shots for the MIS hoping that its pet project, the Human Resource Information System (HRIS) which we are piloting here in the region will continue to flourish and will be a way of life of every teaching and non-teaching personnel of DepEd-11.

It is also hoped that the website, http://www.region11.deped.gov.ph will really be DepEd-11's ultimate source of DepED issuances, updates, announcements and other relevant information needed in the field in the most economical and cost efficient way.

In the recently concluded One Day Orientation Conference on Regional School Based Sports Development Program, four major factors that affected the poor performance of our athletes are identified such as: short period of training, less skilled coaches and chaperons, undefined procedures in the selection of athletes and no comprehensive sports development program.

Starting this year, Dr. Fidel D. Japos, Regional Task Force on School Sports (TFSS) Head said that a functional school based sports development program shall be in placed in all schools in the region.

The following are the objectives of the said sports program: 1. To develop and improve level of performance of athletes and attain a Palaro Standard Athletes; 2. To update and upgrade the technical skills and knowledge of coaches and chaperons; and 3. To enhance the knowledge and skills of athletes in their respective sports discipline.

Fifteen procedures and strategies are enumerated with the main purpose of the Adoption of a School Based Sports Development Program in line with the efforts of the Region to institutionalize a program that will identify/discover students with potential talent in sports and develop their skills for higher level of athletic competitions.

July is the Observance of the National Disaster Consciousness Month. Each school nationwide is tasked to conduct a simultaneous earthquake drill. The exercise will test the contingency plan of the school and inculcate an attitude of resiliency in the minds of the schoolchildren.

The activity will also remind the school officials to be prepared and undertake all the necessary mitigation measures to protect all school children while attending their classes in schools. Mr. Romeo Balaba is the focal person of this activity.
