THE Philippine football delegation seeing action in a series of tournaments in Europe scored a major breakthrough when it captured the gold in the Girls 14 category of the Costa Blanca Cup in Benidorm, Spain.
The touring RP team, represented by the Makati Football Club, actually finished 1-2 in the division after sending two teams into the finals.
Four young football players from the Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) bannered the gold medal-winning squad and the silver medal-winning group in the Seven-Aside tournament.
Goalkeeper Erika Lorraine Turtur and Alyssa Marie Ang composed the champion team, while Noreen Kim Maligad and Kyhren Angela Dimaandal are part of the team that finished second.
Turtur was the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the 2007 Alaska Cup in Alabang after powering her team to the crown in the Girls 12 and runner-up finish in the Girls 14.
Eight other Ateneo players are currently playing in the European campaign.
After the Costa Blanca Cup, the Filipino booters will play in the prestigious Gothia Cup, considered the biggest youth football tournament in the world, in Gotenborg, Sweden from July 13 to 20.
Last stop will be the Denmark Football Festival scheduled in Aarhus, Denmark from July 21 to 27.
