2 hurt in power plant explosion

TWO persons were injured when a grenade exploded inside a power plant in Maasim, Sarangani Friday evening.

Military report showed that an unidentified suspect lobbed a grenade at the substation of the South Cotabato Electric Cooperative II (Socoteco) in Sitio Bairan, Barangay Poblacion.

The incident happened around 7:20 p.m. of July 18.

The suspect readily fled from the scene onboard a motorcycle and was last seen heading towards Barangay Daliao in the said town.

Eastern Mindanao Command spokesman Major Armand Rico said authorities are looking into the angle of extortion by the New People's Army (NPA) as the motive behind the grenade explosion.

It was learned that the rebel group had long been demanding revolutionary tax from Socoteco for sometime now.

Leaders of the community meanwhile condemned the attack at the power facility.

There was, however, no power interruption in the area as a result of the attack. (BOT)
