Monday, July 21, 2008 Dureza pooh-poohs Arroyo's unpopularity
PRESS Secretary Jesus Dureza was quick to disperse the recent Social Weather Station (SWS) survey that ranked President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as the most unpopular leader of the country since the Marcos era.
In a text message, Dureza said "the President will continue to undertake, even unpopular, but necessary measures for the nation."
It was reported over the weekend that a survey conducted by the SWS last June showed that only 22 percent of Filipinos were satisfied with the performance of President Arroyo, while 60 percent of the population were dissatisfied.
This is the lowest rating compared to her predecessors, even including President Joseph Estrada who was ousted from power by a popular uprising.
President Arroyo's ratings were almost uniform throughout the country and have even permeated through the different social strata, the survey showed.
However, the results of the survey were quickly dismissed by the top Cabinet officials of Malacañang, with Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita saying that more than surveys, it is also important that the people feel the effects of the works of the government.
On the other hand, Presidential Management Staff director general Cerge Remonde was quoted as saying that Arroyo is "paying a high price" for making unpopular decisions like sticking it out on the expanded value-added tax.
"While the President is sensitive to public opinion, she took an oath that requires her to do what is right not what is popular. It's very unfair to a very dedicated and hardworking president like Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo," he said.
Even in the Visayas, where the President's administration is strongest, dissatisfaction level hit an all-time high. (CPM)
