Duterte appoints new city engineer

MAYOR Rodrigo R. Duterte appointed a former division manager of the Davao City Water District (DCWD) as Davao City engineer effective July 21, 2008.

Engineer Jose Gestoveo officially assumed the post of city engineer, which was left vacant by Engineer Meinrado Metran--who resigned March 2007.

Engineer Joaquin Cui has been serving as officer-in-charge since Metran's resignation.

Gestavio, who served in DCWD for 19 years, said addressing the city's drainage system is the first marching order given to him by the mayor.

Also appointed with Gestoveo is former Task Force Davao deputy chief Yusop Jemlanie as chief of Brigada Canal under the City Engineer's Office.

Jemlanie was instructed by the mayor to use the P90 million unused balance from the drainage system project to enhance existing canals and drainage.

The mayor has opted for this solution to the flooding as private property owners refused to allow the government to get part of their land for a new drainage system. (GLP)
